About Me

Thanks for stopping by EdgeRaven; you can call me Kalog. I am a software engineer currently based out of San Diego, California, but I have been an avid PredictIt user since 2018.

I started out playing Texas Hold’em in college, where I’d make a small, but consistent profit playing cash games on the weekends and tournaments online. A huge basketball fan my whole life, I naturally found myself transitioning to sports betting via the shared concepts of odds and expected value, which are fundamental to any serious betting approach. On top of that, I have been investing and trading consistently in the stock market since I was a teenager, so naturally when I found out about PredictIt– a legal online betting site incorporating the pricing mechanics of stocks and derivative contracts– my interest was piqued. A short while later, I was hooked, and I jumped in with both feet despite knowing little about politics at the time. Since then, I have worked my way up to earning a steady monthly profit on PredictIt.

In betting, the sharks are commonly referred to as “smart money.” At EdgeRaven, we prefer to call ourselves “intelligent money” instead. I do not consider myself a shark. And while I don’t earn six figures a year doing this stuff, I have been able to make a reasonable, consistent profit on PredictIt for a good while, and you definitely can too. So even if you’re not a shark, you can always be a raven.

Site purpose: supporting the PI ecology

I founded this site in 2019, on the eve of major generational political events like Donald Trump’s impeachment trial and the 2020 Presidential Election. Since these are events that will, no doubt, transform the next era of American politics, in my opinion there is no better time to be wagering on them. Yes, this encourages political awareness, but I know most people are here for the $$. If that sounds like you, you’re in luck: we are approaching a golden age of betting in the United States, with online bookies on the fringes of becoming legalized nationally, and the rapid growth in popularity of political prediction markets in just the last couple years.

My ultimate goal is to keep new and intermediate PI users informed enough to hold their own in these markets. EdgeRaven’s content will consist of knowledge and resources I wish I had when I was just starting out. Maintaining this site is a way to help keep me engaged in the game, personally. But more importantly, giving the average player a fighting chance is vital to the health of any betting system, including PredictIt. Top tier players need average and new traders in order to profit off their mistakes. However, these newer players need small wins too, in order to keep trading on the site. And with time, the Joe-schmoe bettors can rise up the ranks to become top gun sharks, too (or ravens, like myself!).

Want to learn more? Here is a wonderful article describing the betting system ecology, applied to poker (where the concept originated). Here is another.
